Smell of petrol in my 2001 Renault Clio?

Hi, recently i've been getting a strong smell of petrol inside my car. It only happens when im going at slow speeds and when i'm stuck in traffic and using a lot of clutch. It never seems to happen if im driving at a steady speed for long periods of time. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be and how i could check this myself? The car is a 2001 1.2 Renault Clio Thanks
