How can I tell there's a bug in my ear?

I'm really really freaking out right now. I thought I heard something buzzing/whirring in my ear once 10 minutes ago. I flipped out and immediately filled my ear up with water for 15 seconds and then let the water come out. I made the silly mistake of putting a q tip in my ear to try and see if there was anything there. It started throbbing a little although it could just be my paranoia. How do I know if there's a bug in my ear?? I'm flipping out and can't go to sleep now!
