signs of late stage liver failure?

My dad has had hep c for about 15 years. he quit drinking 10 yrs ago. he seemed to be doing well, then all of a sudden he has gotten really sick. He is in and out of the hospital with esophegeal varices and ascites. He is weak, confused, and wont eat hardly anything. Is my dad dying? how long does he have?
