What's it like for the 'first time'?

Okay so I'm genuinely asking for a friend!! My best friend and her boyfriend have been together for some time now and she is scared about having sex. A first she thought she was ready but when I was talking to her and a few of our other friends, she didn't realise that for some people their first time can be painful. Because I'm a virgin, I was wondering: What was your first time like? Did it hurt, if so for how long? Did you bleed at all? Do yu recommend foreplay before hand? And any other useful information :) Sorry if this isn't in the correct category :)
