What are these light brown spots on my skin?

After searching the internet for a while, I found the most plausible reason is Cafe-au-lait birthmarks. However, I was not born with these (they appeared last year) and they seem to be spreading. I have about 6 now on my upper rib cage area. They vary from size and shape, but they are all the same light brown color. Another factor that concerns me is that they're always dry and peeling (similar to when you have dead skin). I do not smoke nor do I tan, so I honestly have to idea why they are appearing now (I'm 15) rather than when I was born. Has anyone else experienced this?
