Why aren't Clitoridectomies the cultural norm, but male circumcision is?

After all, male circumcision is the cultural norm in many western countries, so why not this? What's the difference? After all, both are barbaric practises of mutilation, and are specifically done to desensitize sexual stimulation. So why is this DISGUSTING practise done only to males? By the way, I am intact. Thankfully, in my culture, such barbaric practises are almost unheard of.
