Question on Depakote for bipolar disorder?

Can it ever make mania/hypomania worse? I've been on it 3 days for bipolar mania to calm me down and even though i'm not doing half the manic things i usually do like drink, do drugs, and never sleep, my brain still feels like its racing and my self esteem is sky high?
