Car died while driving. Here are the symptoms?

1997 Ford escort 2.0 Split Port Car sat for 3 months awaiting a donor engine. We got the new engine put in (from a salvage yard). It started right up and ran good for an entire day about 60 miles worth of driving. The next morning I put gas in for the first time since the repair and topped it off at a full tank. I put a half tank in. I drove it for 40 miles to work, then when I went to drive home and got about 2 miles and it died while driving. No puttering or hard sounds, just died. Battery is good. Starter is turning the engine I checked compression and that is good I replaced plugs and wires All 4 plugs have spark And I smell gas on the plugs after attempting to start. I'm stumped on this one. If anyone has any idea just throw something at me to try next.
