My throat burns. What could it be?

I have had this every couple of months for a few days for about 2-4 years. Whenever I swallow anything it burns so bad. Even when I cough or try to talk. Yesterday morning I woke up and my throat was super scratchy, this morning I woke up to a burning sensation in my throat whenever I swallowed anything. I didn't feel like taking any cold medicine. The burning sensation has gone away almost completely and now its just sore and scratchy. I just took some cold medicine to make it go away quicker. So what could this be if it has been happening for so long? Could it be acid reflex?
