How can I make my 700w amp work with a 400w subwoofer.?

I would like to know how I could connect my 700w amplifier to a 400w subwoofer without blowing the subwoofer. If you need to know, the stereo outputs 45w to the amplifier. Would just turning the gain on the amp be enough?
